Professor Hovhanness I. Pilikian is a distinguished British Armenian Polymath: Theatre-director,
Social Scientist (with University Degrees in Psychology, English Literature,
and Anthropology), Poet, Composer, Sculptor, Academic, Historian, Linguist, and
Author of path-breaking books on Classical Japanese Theatre, and Armenian
Cinema.

Sometime Fellow of Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, a
Life-member of the Convocation of the
University of London, Past member of
the First Academic Board of the City
Literary Institute – the premier institution of Adult Learning in London, a
Consultant to the annual International
Festival of Guitar Music in Charlton Kings/Colchester (Britain), Professor
Pilikian was commissioned by the Encyclopaedia
Britannica to write the Entry on Max Reinhardt, one of the greatest German
theatre-directors of History.

Pilikian has contributed
important articles to DRAMA, and THEATRE QUARTERLY.

A legendary theatre-director of
classical Greek plays, Pilikian’s work on Classical Greek Drama during the
1970-80 was acknowledged as being entirely original, totally innovative, and
absolutely pioneering in the contemporary history of British theatre. It created a fashion for others to
imitate.

Pilikian has directed over 40
theatre-productions, some cast with
all-stars
including Diana Dors, Derek Jacobi, Keith Michell, Yvonne Mitchell, Alfred
Marks, Richard Greene, Derren Nesbitt, Sarah Badel, Noel Howlett, Howard Lang,
Willoughby Goddard, Reg Lye, Tony Sympson, Maxwell Shaw..

Two of the world’s greatest
set-designers, Josef Svoboda, and Ralph Koltai, have designed his productions
(the latter – three times!).

One of Pilikian’s actors,
Stephen Shepphard – a graduate of RADA – wrote a thriller titled MONTE CARLO (later turned into a TV
series by the Hollywood Superstar Ms Joan Collins), where “Hovhanness Pilikian” is the main James-Bond Style hero saving lives
during the Second World War, as Pilikian himself was the child of survivors of
the attempted genocide of the Armenians perpetrated by the Young Turk regime of
the Ottoman Empire in 1915, which is of course true to the case of Professor
Pilikian’s own family-history.

Pilikian’s production (for the
Athenian producer Emmanuel Gounalakis) in London’s West End (Shaw Theatre) of
Shakespeare’s HAMLET was of equal
weight and revolutionary innovations, this time in Shakespeare studies, which
inspired the famous Israeli intellectual and fellow theatre-director Oded
Be’eri to make a documentary film about it (with a double premiere in 2001,
first in the Cinematheque of Tel Aviv,
then in the Jerusalem Cinematheque,
under the auspices of His Most Reverend Beatitude, Archbishop Torkom Manoukian,
the Patriarch of Jerusalem Armenians, one of the Three Keepers of the Holy places).

Over two decades ago, Pilikian
had launched in London simultaneously two very unique theatre companies - the
FIRST all-black British theatre company called Cervantes Players, and the FIRST exclusively Mask-theatre Company
(called Hana-no), not only the first of their kind in Britain, but
also in Europe.

Over two decades ago, Pilikian
presented for and at the National Film
Theatre in London, the First ever season of Armenian
cinema, followed by many others, over the years in Paris,
New York, and Montreal.

Pilikian has directed two
important feature length documentaries (for Gounalakis Productions); A King of Saudi Arabia, the story
(with an extended interview) of Dr. Sahmsuddin Al-Fasi, the world leader of the
Sufis, and The New Supremes, reconstituted
by the Superstar Mary Wilson, for their first appearance in London.

An eleven-language man
(including Classical Armenian, Greek, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, modern German,
French, and some Russian and Chinese!) Pilikian has directed Classical Greek Drama and Shakespeare, in Britain at the Greenwich Theatre, Chichester
Festival Theatre, Yvonne Arnaud theatre etc., in Iceland
at the National Theatre, in Slovenia
at the National Theatre, in the USA
at the MacArtur Theatre of the world-famous University of Princeton.

Pilikian has lectured at the
Dutch Centre of Drama (where all the Drama teachers of Holland are trained),
Princeton University (USA), The State University of Yerevan, The Institute of
Arts, The Literary Institute, the Institute of Linguistics (in Armenia),
Central School of Art and Design, the Slade School of Fine Arts (University of
London), The City Literary Institute, at the London Headquarters of the
Theosophical Society, RILKO (Research Into Lost Knowledge), The London Earth Mysteries
etc.
Pilikian was invited to deliver
the Millennial Lecture (2000) for
The
Swedenborg Society in London.

Pilikian has a Bachelor of Arts
in English Studies (American University
of Beirut), Bachelor of Sciences (Honours) in Psychology (Open University), a Master of Arts in
Social Anthropology (School of Oriental

Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholar (London
School of Economics), Fellow of Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst at

first of a first ever course in
Britain of Theatre-Directing at

the youngest ever recipient of a Soviet State Prize, the Petross Adamian Award for Achievement in the Theatre-Arts, in the
